More Mellon grants support digital scholarship at U-M
Building on last year’s $899,000 grant to build a new online publishing platform, the University of Michigan is receiving two further grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop publishing infrastructure for digital scholarship in the humanities and qualitative social sciences. A Mapping the Free Ebook Supply Chain $28,000 grant will use quantitative and qualitative methods to address two linked questions: How do readers discover open access academic e-books? What kinds of metrics are most useful to publishers seeking to understand usage of these digital resources? A Model Contract for Digital Scholarship $73,500 grant in partnership with Emory University involves iterative drafting and community consultation to develop a model author-publisher contract optimized for the publication of digital scholarship.

Schultz and Wright to lead faculty governance in 2016-17
The Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs has elected William Schultz, a professor in the College of Engineering, to chair U-M’s central faculty governance system for the coming year. Schultz, professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, and naval architecture and marine engineering, was elected at the April 4 SACUA meeting with members casting paper ballots. David Wright, associate professor of accounting at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, was elected vice chair by acclamation. Both positions are for one-year terms that begin May 1. John Lehman, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, also ran for chair. Wright was unopposed for vice chair. Schultz and Wright also will serve as chair and vice chair, respectively, of the 74-member Senate Assembly. SACUA is the nine-member executive arm of the Senate Assembly and the Faculty Senate. Schultz will succeed current SACUA Chair Silke-Maria Weineck, professor of Germanic languages and literatures, and comparative literature, and Wright will succeed Schultz. Weineck’s term on SACUA expires April 30, 2017.
Campus Memorial will honor students who died in the past year
Friends, family members and campus partners are invited to attend a memorial program to honor the lives and accomplishments of student members of the U-M family who have died during this academic year. The Campus Memorial is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today (April 11) in the Vandenberg Room of the Michigan League. A light reception will follow in the second floor concourse of the Michigan League. The Michigan experience has been forever impacted by the companionship and contributions of those being honored, and the end of the academic year is a fitting time to offer remembrances and commemorations. This year three members of the U-M student community will be remembered: Tyler Barthel, Joshua Brigham and Benjamin Moray. The Campus Memorial is sponsored by the Division of Student Life and the Association of Religious Counselors.
