Every minute of every day, a woman dies of pregnancy related complications. “Stories of Mothers Lost” is an exhibit of handmade quilts that honors and remembers them.

The exhibit was initiated by the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, a nonprofit organization. With funding from the United Nations Population Fund, the alliance sent out a call to thousands of members across the world. They asked for fabric panels to commemorate a woman in their community who had died in pregnancy or childbirth.

They received more than 120 panels from 46 organizations, representing women from 19 countries across four continents. The exhibit is in Lane Hall weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. through Dec. 11. Its presentation allows families to express grief, and serves as a mechanism for advocacy and communication on an issue that transcends country borders and impacts all.

“Stories of Mothers Lost” is supplied by the University of Michigan Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and its Program in Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice. The exhibit is hosted by the Department of Women’s Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.
