Former U-M track star Bob Ufer broadcast 364 consecutive Michigan Wolverine football games on the radio, first for Ann Arbor’s WPAG and then for WJR in Detroit. He died in October 1981 shortly after being honored at the Iowa game. He was known for his pronunciation of “Meechigan,” derived from Fielding Yost’s southern drawl and “Uferisms.” He described The Big House as “the hole that Yost dug, Crisler paid for, Canham carpeted and Schembechler fills every Saturday afternoon with 100,000 fans.”
