Twigs dining hall wins 2 Star certification

Michigan Dining recently announced that Twigs dining hall at the Oxford residential neighborhood has become a 2 Star Certified Green Restaurant by the Green Restaurant Association, a national non-profit organization promoting sustainability in the restaurant industry. The dining hall meets high sustainability levels in the categories of disposables, energy use, food, building materials, chemicals, waste and water. The association made note of Twigs’ comprehensive recycling system and no use of plastic foam products. 

U-M’s Kota to lead national manufacturing consortium

The White House has announced that Sridhar Kota, the Herrick Professor of Engineering and director of the Institute for Manufacturing Leadership, will lead MForesight: The Alliance for Manufacturing Foresight. It is a national consortium to identify emerging advanced manufacturing technologies to enhance the country’s innovation ecosystem, manufacturing competitiveness and national security. The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology are funding MForesight with a three-year, $5.8 million cooperative agreement.

U-M opens world-class battery research lab

The recent opening of the U-M Energy Institute’s Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility, or Battery Lab, further expands the Midwest’s rapidly growing battery research and manufacturing capabilities. The open-access lab will provide space to build and test battery concepts while fully protecting the intellectual property of its users. The facility is funded with a $2 million investment from U-M, with $5 million in additional financial support from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and $2.1 million from Ford Motor Co. Sourcing.

Proposed Regents’ Bylaws revisions now online

Revisions to the Regents’ Bylaws have been proposed and now are being posted for public comment. These bylaw amendments incorporate organizational and policy changes presented at prior meetings of the Board of Regents. To view the revisions, go to tinyurl.com/q873h93. Faculty, staff partners sought to reach underresourced schools

Faculty and staff are needed to work with Wolverine Express, a school visitation program. It brings together a diverse group of U-M faculty, staff and students, traveling by bus to select high schools in underresourced areas of Michigan. The group facilitates presentations designed to promote academic success and college aspiration while also sharing information about their U-M experiences. More information is at www.ceo.umich.edu. Destination Detroit Center showcases outreach programs

The Destination Detroit Center event from 9 a.m.-noon Friday at the U-M Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Ave., Suite 150, showcases university outreach programs housed at the center. Their activities include innovative collaborations with civic and community organizations, and cultural and educational programming available to citizens of Metro Detroit. Units and individuals expected to present include the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Social Work Technical Assistance Center, Residential College Semester in Detroit and Teach for America. Representatives of K-12 schools, civic organizations and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to attend along with U-M alumni, faculty, staff and students.
