UMHS supports education of homeless youth in the community

U-M Health System faculty and staff have donated more than 100 cases of school supplies and 355 backpacks to the Education Project for Homeless Youth in Washtenaw County. This is the fourth year UMHS has participated in this community service event, and the largest amount raised over that time. Thanks to the donations, more than 1,300 children will have a better opportunity to succeed in the classroom. The program serves students including those living in shelters, motels, temporary foster care placements, cars and abandoned houses, and those living temporarily with friends and family.

Staff nominations sought for Candace J. Johnson Award

The Office of the Provost wishes to recognize exemplary staff at the Ann Arbor and Health System campuses with the Candace J. Johnson Award for Staff Excellence. Established in 2004, the award is a memorial to a dedicated staff member, Candy Johnson. Candy’s special blend of professionalism and personality was a positive influence in the workplace. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate any regular staff member who combines enthusiasm with excellence to truly make a difference at Michigan. A $500 cash award and certificate will be presented in January by the Office of the Provost. Oct. 30 is the final day nominations will be accepted. Remembrance event planned for Lois Hoffman

The Department of Psychology is hosting a remembrance event for Professor Emerita Lois Hoffman, from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, on the Third Floor Terrace in East Hall. Hoffman died Feb. 13.

Homecoming Weekend activities planned for campus community

Homecoming Weekend at U-M takes place Thursday through Sunday. Join alumni and guests for several community events open to faculty and staff. Friday, Oct. 9 at the Rackham Graduate School: From 3-5 p.m., faculty and staff have the opportunity to attend the Homecoming Program with President Mark Schlissel, who will speak to alumni and guests. From 5-7 p.m., join Homecoming guests at the Community Festival on the South Ingalls Mall. Celebrate all that makes us proud members of the U-M community with entertainment, games, local foods and drinks from Roos Roast and Shimmy Shack, and more. Sunday, Oct. 11 — Victors 5K Run/Walk: Support scholarships by participating in the Victors 5K Run/Walk. The race begins at 9:30 a.m., with a 9 a.m. check-in. People of all ages are invited to participate at their own pace. A winner will be awarded ribbons for the best time in several categories, including a current faculty/staff category. Regents meeting planned for Oct. 15

The Board of Regents will have its monthly meeting at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Riverfront Center, Suite A, adjacent to the University of Michigan-Flint. To offer public comment at the meeting, sign up in advance at www.regents.umich.edu/meetings/publform.html. Public comments on agenda items will be taken prior to their consideration. Comments on nonagenda items will follow the regular business agenda. Medication disposal event set for Tuesday

The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and the Great Lakes Clean Water Organization are sponsoring a drug disposal event to help the community safely get rid of unused medications. Community members can bring unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday to the south side of North University Avenue, next to the Chemistry Building, or environmentally responsible and secure disposal.
