U-M is ranked as the world’s 21st top institution, according to Times Higher Education.
A change in the methodology used by Times Higher Education World Rankings makes it impossible to compare this ranking to the 2014-15 ranking.

This year, the annual list doubled in size with more than 800 institutions from 70 different countries, compared with 31 countries in the top 400 last year.
Additionally, Times Higher Education changed how it handles citations by removing the number of papers with more than 1,000 authors from the citations indicator.
University data officials noted that institutions that are very strong in life sciences and natural sciences, like U-M, now rank lower than in previous years.
The list ranks the top 800 universities worldwide and is based on 13 performance indicators separated into five categories: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
U-M was one of 17 U.S. universities making the top 25. That list includes: California Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, University of California-Berkeley, Columbia University, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, Duke University, Carnegie Mellon University and Northwestern University.
The ranking is one of two released annually by Times Higher Education. Earlier this year, U-M was ranked 19th in the organization’s annual Reputation Rankings, which are based on results from an invitation-only survey of scholars from around the world.
