This month in history (119 years ago)
On April 26, 1896, the year after the announcement of Wilhelm Roentgen’s discovery of the ability to use electromagnetic radiation to create an X-ray, the first recorded medical use occurred at U-M. Stanislas M. Keenan of Eloise Hospital in Wayne County, who had become interested in Professor Henry S. Carhart’s work with X-rays, brought to Ann Arbor a patient with a bullet in his foot. Using X-rays produced in the Physics Laboratory, Carhart and Dr. William James Herdman, professor of diseases of the mind and nervous system and of electrotherapeutics, photographed the foot. They demonstrated the presence of an opaque foreign body.
