Dr. Sarla P. Kothary, a researcher in the Department of Anesthesiology and Neurology, died Jan. 20 at home in her husband’s (Dr. Piyush C. Kothary) arms.
Kothary bravely battled pancreatic cancer for 20 months. She retired from the University of Michigan after 36 years of service. As a clinical researcher, she was known for her concern and kindness for patients in the recovery room and outpatient clinics. Her work on muscle relaxants led to a better understanding of these pharmaceutical drugs.
Kothary enjoyed traveling, often in connection with national and international meetings. She loved people, enjoyed the company of family and friends and cooking and entertaining at home. She also enjoyed reading and music. She always wanted to help people and in that same spirit, she chose to donate her body to the U-M Medical School.
Kothary is survived by two daughters, Shilpa (Kaytan) and Priya (Jote), and two granddaughters, Deven and Misha.
