Upon news of President Kennedy’s assassination, U-M President Harlan Hatcher consulted his executive officers and the president of Ohio State University, then canceled the Ohio State-Michigan football game scheduled for the following day. On Monday, the day of the president’s funeral, classes were dismissed, and Hatcher conducted a memorial service at Hill Auditorium for students and faculty. Hatcher had previously invited Kennedy to speak at the 1964 commencement. He repeated that invitation to President Johnson, who delivered his address on “The Great Society.”
