The McMath-Hulbert Observatory of the University of Michigan, at Lake Angelus in Oakland County, opened on July 1, 1930. The following years were spent perfecting the mechanical equipment with which to take successful celestial motion pictures of the planets, shadow changes on the moon and sunspots through the 10-½ inch telescope. The pictures educational value had been seen as most important, but their scientific value grew. The work was watched closely by the scientific world, and praised by professional astronomers.
