Eight faculty members have received one of the University of Michigan’s top honors as Distinguished University Professors.
The appointments were approved by the Board of Regents on Thursday. They are effective Sept. 1.
Recently appointed DUPs give an inaugural lecture that highlights their work at the university. The lecture is typically delivered during the first or second full year of their appointments.
The recipients are:
• Tamas I. Gombosi, Konstantin I. Gringauz Distinguished University Professor of Space Science. Gombosi also is the Rollin M. Gerstacker Professor of Engineering, professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences, and professor of aerospace engineering, College of Engineering.
• Jessy W. Grizzle, Elmer G. Gilbert Distinguished University Professor of Engineering. Grizzle also is the Jerry W. and Carol L. Levin Professor of Engineering, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and professor of mechanical engineering, CoE.
• Robert T. Kennedy, Hobart H. Willard Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry. He also is professor of chemistry, LSA; and professor of pharmacology, Medical School.
• Donald R. Kinder, Philip E. Converse Distinguished University Professor of Political Science. He also is professor of political science and professor of psychology, LSA.
• Harry L.T. Mobley, Frederick G. Novy Distinguished University Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. He also is chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Frederick G. Novy Collegiate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, and professor of microbiology and immunology, Medical School.
• Susan A. Murphy, Herbert E. Robbins Distinguished University Professor of Statistics. She also is professor of statistics, LSA; and professor of psychiatry, Medical School.
• Peter A. Railton, Gregory S. Kavka Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy. He also is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and professor of philosophy, LSA.
• Peter D. Sparling, Rudolf Arnheim Distinguished University Professor of Dance. He also is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of dance, School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
Distinguished University Professorships, established in 1947, recognize full or associate professors for exceptional scholarly or creative achievement, national and international reputation, and superior teaching skills. Each professorship bears a name determined by the appointive professor in consultation with her or his dean.
Recipients receive an annual salary supplement of $5,000 and an annual research supplement of $5,000.
