Athletics operations center receives final approval

Regents authorized issuing bids and awarding construction contracts for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Operations Center project. The new 18,000-gross-square-foot facility on South State Street will house maintenance shops, offices, laundry, shipping and receiving, and equipment storage.

The $6 million project is being funded by the athletic department and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2015.

President’s Residence fire suppression system to be replaced

A $400,000 project is planned that will replace the fire suppression system at the President’s Residence after testing during the current renovation project showed interior corrosion in the existing piping.

The project will be completed this summer and will be funded from university investment proceeds.

Slottow recognized with resolution

Regents read a resolution of appreciation for Timothy P. Slottow, executive vice president and chief financial officer, who steps down from his position Friday. They lauded Slottow for leading the university’s unprecedented growth and continued financial stability in the midst of recession and declining state support.

Slottow now assumes his new role as president of the University of Phoenix.

Retirements

Dr. William F. Chandler, Richard C. Schneider Professor of Neurosurgery, professor of neurosurgery, and professor of internal medicine, Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the faculty in 1979. Chandler is an internationally recognized neurosurgeon. His vision and leadership were instrumental to the development of the university’s Pituitary and Neuroendocrine Center. His scholarly publications include 140 peer-reviewed journal articles, 34 book chapters and three books. He was a frequent invited lecturer, received the Medical School’s Outstanding Clinician Award in 2003 and was honored by the establishment of the William F. Chandler Collegiate Professorship in Neurosurgery in 2009.

Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, professor of chemistry, LSA, and professor of biological chemistry, Medical School, effective July 13. Coleman began her career in higher education administration in 1980 as acting director of basic research at the L.P. Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky. After serving as president of the University of Iowa from 1995-2002, she became U-M’s 13th president in 2002. Coleman is highly respected for her leadership during the state’s most challenging economic era since the Depression. She has been a powerful voice for diversity, global teaching and research. Her presidency has been marked by a deep commitment to sustainability, residential life, interdisciplinary scholarship, innovation and creativity, and economic development and collaboration.

Michael R. Kilbourn, professor of radiology in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the faculty in 1987. Kilbourn is a leader in the field of nuclear medicine with special expertise in radiochemistry and radiopharmaceutical development. He published more than 200 scientific papers, authored the textbook “Fluorine-18 Labeling of Radiopharmaceuticals” (1990), and served as editor-in-chief of Radiochemical Syntheses. He served as director of the university’s Cyclotron Facilities and helped develop new cyclotron facilities. Kilbourn received the Society of Nuclear Medicine’s Paul C. Aebersold Award for Outstanding Achievement in Basic Science Applied to Nuclear Medicine and the Academy of Radiology Research’s Distinguished Investigator Award.

Dr. James A. McNamara, Drs. Thomas M. and Doris Graber Endowed Professor of Dentistry and professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, professor of cell and developmental biology in the Medical School, and research professor in the Center for Human Growth and Development, effective June 30. He joined the faculty in 1972. McNamara’s research focused on orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, and prospective and retrospective investigations of widely used clinical orthodontic and orthopedic techniques. He has authored and edited books, book chapters and monographs, was a frequent invited lecturer, led graduate thesis committees, and received the American Board of Orthodontics Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award.

Susan B. Neuman, professor of education in the School of Education, effective May 31. She joined the faculty as in 2000. Neuman served as director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement from 2000-01 and as assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education for the U.S. Department of Education from 2001-03. A leading authority on early literacy development, Neuman studied early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction for economically disadvantaged children. An author and co-author of several books, Neuman received an honorary doctorate from California State University, Hayward, and the Distinguished Alumni Award for Public Service from the University of the Pacific.

Dr. Chintana Paramagul, clinical associate professor of radiology in the Medical School, effective June 30. She joined U-M’s Department of Radiology from 1977-80, served several years in private practice, and returned to U-M in 1988. She is a leading radiologist with special expertise in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer utilizing ultrasound imaging and magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Her collaborative research projects explored the development of algorithms used in the computer-assisted identification and classification of lesions suspicious for breast cancer. Paramagul co-authored 36 peer-reviewed articles in the leading scientific journals, and was a frequent invited lecturer.

Karen J. Ridley, assistant professor of dental hygiene, periodontics and oral medicine-dental hygiene in the School of Dentistry, effective June 30. She joined the faculty in 1974. She is a leader in the field of dental hygiene education, developed and co-authored instructional resources including “Oral Examination Procedures for Dental Hygienists,” served as director of the Dental Hygiene Graduate Program, and coordinated the online Master of Science Dental Hygiene Program. Ridley taught a range of courses, was actively involved in numerous professional organizations and received honors including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the School of Dentistry and the Overall Outstanding Instructor Award.

Dr. Rebecca Wynne Van Dyke, professor of internal medicine in the Medical School, effective June 30. She joined the faculty in 1989. Since 1993, she has also served as a staff physician at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Dr. Van Dyke is a leading scientist in the fields of hepatology and gastroenterology. Her research critically examined a range of topics including liver disease and gastroenterology. She was a prolific author, active in professional organizations and a frequent invited lecturer. She received the Kaiser Permanente Award for Excellence in Pre-Clinical Teaching and the Richard D. Judge Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching.

John Price Wilkin, associate university librarian for library information technology and publishing and librarian, University Library, effective Aug. 2. He joined the faculty in 1986, left to serve as systems librarian for information services at the University of Virginia from 1992-94, and returned to U-M in 1994. Wilkin served as head of the Humanities Text Initiative, head of the Digital Library Production Service, executive director of the HathiTrust, and played an instrumental role in the Michigan Digitization Partnership with Google, Inc., among other leadership roles. He has received the Library and Information Technology Association-Library Hi Tech Award for Outstanding Communication for Continuing Education in Library and Information Science.
