The Prison Creative Arts Project invites the public to an opening reception from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, to celebrate the 19th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners, through April 9 at the Duderstadt Center Gallery on North Campus.

Formerly incarcerated artists who have re-entered into the community will speak about what the show means to prisoners. Director Daniel Heyns of the Michigan Department of Corrections will speak to the significance of PCAP’s arts programming in the Michigan prisons.

This nationally recognized show over 19 years is the largest exhibition of prisoner art in the country, with more than 300 works of art by more than 200 artists this year. It sheds light on the talents found behind prison walls and encourages the public to engage. This year’s exhibition, curated by Janie Paul, Sari Adelson and Charlie Michaels, presents the strongest work from more than 25 prisons throughout the state.

Exhibit hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday and Monday. The exhibit is accompanied by the release of the sixth annual Literary Review of Creative Writing by Michigan Prisoners, “The Sky is On Fire, After All.” More information, go to www.lsa.umich.edu/pcap.
