FDA approves Wayne State treatment regimen
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new multiple sclerosis treatment regimen developed through global research overseen and conducted at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. The development will immediately change the treatment regimen of millions of multiple sclerosis patients around the world. The FDA approved the new drug application that calls for the injection of Copaxone at a higher dose, but fewer times per week for patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.
Michigan Tech Clean Snowmobile Challenge conditions ideal
It’s a near perfect year for the 15th annual Society of Automotive Engineers Clean Snowmobile Challenge, March 3-8 at Michigan Technological University, due to ample snow and solidly sub-freezing temperatures. A total of 13 teams are registered in the challenge’s internal combustion category. Engineering students from participating schools take a stock snowmobile and reengineer it to reduce emissions and noise and increase fuel efficiency, while preserving riding excitement.

University of California, Los Angeles honors Albright
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright recently accepted the University of California, Los Angeles Medal before a packed house in Royce Hall and delivered a keynote address that focused on the difficulty of creating effective foreign policy in the face of rapid technological change and growing global interdependence. “The world’s a mess,” she said.
MIT names provost, chancellor
Two longtime members of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty, who arrived at MIT in the early 1980s as graduate students, have been named provost and chancellor. Martin Schmidt, an electrical engineering professor and associate provost since 2008 and acting provost since last fall, has been named provost. Cynthia Barnhart, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is chancellor, with overarching responsibility for graduate and undergraduate education and student life.
University of Iowa wins $17.2 million for driving safety research
The University of Iowa Public Policy Center has received $17.2 million in grants to conduct a first-of-its-kind survey on vehicle safety, launch a national education campaign and develop new technologies to help prevent some crashes. Funding for the research comes as part of the Safety Research and Education Program established by the recent Toyota Economic Loss class action settlement in California.
