After years of little growth in the mid-1970s, and following more than a decade of planning, the Board of Regents in 1979 approved a plan for a new hospital at an estimated cost of $254 million. The Replacement Hospital Project, as the new University Hospital was called, was the most ambitious building project undertaken at the university.
