Jianzhi Zhang, the Marshall W. Nirenberg Collegiate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, has received a $1.16 million grant for the first genome-wide characterization of genetic tradeoffs entitled Genomic Studies of antagonistic pleiotropy from the National Institutes of Health. The objectives are to study the prevalence of antagonistic pleiotropy, also known as genetic tradeoffs, in yeast. It is widely invoked in explanations and models of aging, cancer, genetic disease and more.

The Michigan Cancer Consortium has presented a Spirit of Collaboration award to Barb Hiltz, executive director of the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor and intermittent lecturer, School of Social Work; and Laurel Northouse, Mary Lou Willard French Professor of Nursing, School of Nursing. The award is for implementing the family-based FOCUS program that provides information and support to cancer patients and their family caregivers, together.

Deborah Loewenberg Ball, dean of the School of Education, William H. Payne Collegiate Professor in Education and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, has received the Educational Research Award from The Council of Scientific Society Presidents. Accomplishments as a leader in education and her recognition as an eminent scholar and educator led to her selection.

Carol J. Boyd, the Deborah J. Oakley Collegiate Professor, has received the Association for Medical Education and Substance Abuse’s 2013 Betty Ford Award. It is given to an individual who has played a significant role in the treatment and recovery of drug-dependent individuals, particularly women. Boyd has spent more than a decade studying abuse of controlled medications by adolescents and young adults, in addition to her life-long focus on alcohol and drug abuse and recovery in women.

The UM-Flint Outreach Faculty Standing Committee has announced nominees for 2013 Michigan Campus Compact Awards: Faculty/Staff Community Service Learning Award, Rebecca Pettengill, corporate and foundation relations officer; Network Leader Award, Mona Munroe-Younis, University Outreach program manager; Campus-Community Partnership Award, Cathleen Miller, associate professor, School of Management, Flint Public Library, IRS Tax Preparation; and Lifetime Achievement Award, Richard Hill-Rowley, associate professor, Earth and Resource Science Department.
