Ferris academy to open in 2014
In response to a recommendation by the Michigan Sheriff’s Association’s Training Council, Ferris State University’s School of Criminal Justice is in the final stages of designing a local Corrections Officers Training Academy that is slated to open in 2014. Although Ferris will not be responsible for providing certification, the academy will allow two tracks for people interested in working in county jails.
WSU School of Nursing receives gift
Jeff and Ellen Adler of California recently presented a $250,000 gift that will provide needed Wayne State University School of Nursing student scholarship support. The gift was part of a $750,000, seven-organization donation the Adlers made to Detroit nonprofits. The College of Nursing received the largest portion of their gift. The college will name the student lounge in the main lobby for the family.
Western expands measures for sustainability
Western Michigan University is a new participant in the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. More than 230 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada are part of the program that offers its own sustainability assessment and rating system. WMU will register and submit data on a yearly basis.

UCLA joins plan to open rehabilitation hospital
The University of California Los Angeles Health System, Cedars-Sinai and Select Medical have announced a partnership to create a 138-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital located in the former Century City Hospital. With an expected opening in late 2015, the new hospital will provide specialized care, advanced treatment and leading-edge technologies to treat individuals with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, amputations, neurological disorders, and musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions.
Northwestern to establish center for materials research
A Chicago-based consortium led by Northwestern University has been awarded $25 million over five years from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish The Center for Hierarchical Materials Design. It will focus on developing the next generation of computational tools, databases and experimental techniques to enable the design of novel materials, one of the primary goals of the Obama administration’s Materials Genome Initiative.
