School of Dentistry to host free mouthguard clinic Aug. 2

Athletes who will participate in sports this fall and winter can have a free, customized mouthguard made for them during the School of Dentistry’s Mouthguard Clinic on Aug. 2.

Athletes ages 6 to 25, including those who wear braces, are invited to be fitted for a mouthguard, which helps protect their teeth and mouth from injuries due to sports contact.

Dental and dental hygiene students, supervised by clinical faculty members, will make mouthguards for the first 100 athletes who register online. A parent or guardian must accompany children under 18 years old. The fitting procedure takes approximately one hour. The mouth guards come in a variety of colors.

“A customized mouthguard is an important piece of equipment for athletes of all ages,” said Romesh Nalliah, associate dean for patient services and clinical professor of dentistry.

“A custom mouthguard made by our dental and dental hygiene students is comfortable to wear and more likely to protect you in case of a collision or injury.”

The clinic will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the first floor of the School of Dentistry, located on the main U-M campus at 1011 N. University Ave. Mouthguard clinic participants can park free in the adjacent Fletcher Street parking ramp, 201 Fletcher St., on the north side of the dental school. Take the “up” ramp to the top level of the parking structure, then walk in the dental school’s main entrance on the top level of the parking structure.

Thank you to the School of Dentistry and all the staff and volunteers involved in organizing the free mouthguard event on August 2nd. Programs like this truly reflect the University of Michigan’s commitment to community health and service. This is a very generous service to the children of the community.
