The University Research Corridor, the long-standing alliance between the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University, has a new name and a new partner.
Now known as Research Universities for Michigan, the coalition has welcomed Michigan Technological University as its fourth member and is signaling an expanded mission aimed at strengthening research collaboration, spurring economic growth and improving quality of life across the state.

The rebrand reflects a broader commitment to serving Michigan’s people and industries through cross-institutional research and innovation.
“The new name captures what has always been at the heart of this partnership: research universities working for Michigan,” said Britany Affolter-Caine, RU4M executive director. “We’re expanding talent, research and innovation with a broader reach and deeper collaboration to grow our state’s economy, boost the competitiveness of key industries, and better the lives and livelihoods of all Michiganders.”
Michigan Tech officially joined the alliance in March, following its recent designation as a Carnegie R1 research institution. Its addition brings new geographic breadth and research strengths to the coalition, which now represents Michigan’s four top-tier public research universities.
“This name change is about more than a rebrand — it’s about reaffirming our commitment to Michigan’s future,” said Kimberly Andrews Espy, president of Wayne State University and chair of RU4M’s executive board. “As Research Universities for Michigan, we are focused on solutions. We actively seek out opportunities to collaborate across institutions, industries and communities, because we know that’s what it takes to drive innovation and deliver real results.”
A focus on collaboration and impact
Recent RU4M initiatives reflect this renewed focus:
- Livable Futures Initiative: More than 100 researchers from RU4M universities recently convened to explore collaborative solutions to challenges related to water, sustainability, health and economic development. Follow-up efforts are underway to seed interdisciplinary research projects with long-term impact.
- Data Portfolio and Regional Snapshots: RU4M launched an online platform showcasing the state’s research strengths, talent pipeline and innovation assets. The platform includes success stories and data visualizations, along with new “regional snapshots” to spotlight local economic opportunities.
- Strengthening the Innovation Ecosystem: In partnership with Business Leaders for Michigan, RU4M is examining how to accelerate innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation statewide — with the goal of boosting Michigan’s national competitiveness.
Together, RU4M institutions conduct more than $3.1 billion in academic research annually, accounting for 93% of all academic R&D in the state. Their collective strengths span areas such as artificial intelligence, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, mobility and more.
“Research Universities for Michigan is more than a name. It’s a promise — to our students, our communities and our state,” Espy said. “Our universities are here to ensure that discovery, innovation and opportunity take root and thrive right here in Michigan.”
