New federal regulations are now in place aimed at preventing individuals or entities located in, or affiliated with, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Russia, Venezuela, Iran, Cuba and North Korea from accessing certain bulk sensitive personal data relating to individuals in the United States or U.S. persons.
These new regulations went into effect on April 8 and implement an executive order issued in February 2024. Enforcement of these regulations will be carried out by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Significant work has already been done to educate and coordinate with a broad-based coalition of university community members, and university staff continue to work to understand the full implications for the U-M community.
