Earthfest 2024, which showcases opportunities in sustainability and climate action across the University of Michigan, takes place Sept. 26 on the Diag.

The annual event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is a touchpoint for the U-M community to sample various pathways to engage on environmental topics and come together toward a shared culture of sustainability.

“As the fall semester unfolds, Earthfest is a tremendous opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to climate and sustainability actions, every day and at all scales,” said Shana Weber, associate vice president for campus sustainability.

“I’m continually inspired by the quality and scale of efforts taking place throughout the university in service to people and the planet, and look forward to cultivating a positive impact together.”

This year’s Earthfest features more than 45 student organizations, university units and Ann Arbor-area nonprofits sharing opportunities to learn about and get involved in sustainable operations, environmental advocacy, research and environmental justice.

Highlights include:

  • A nature walk, organized by Counseling and Psychological Services and Nature Rx at 11 a.m.
  • A tree-planting activity with Grounds Services, taking place at 1:30 p.m. adjacent to the Diag.
  • The U-M Solar Car Team vehicle on display.
  • A passport activity showcasing various student organizations, sustainability courses, internship and volunteer opportunities, and the Excellence in Sustainability Honors Cord program, among other initiatives.

Earthfest is jointly organized by the Office of Campus Sustainability, Student Life Sustainability, the School for Environment and Sustainability, the Graham Sustainability Institute and various other U-M units. The event also will feature live music, local food samples, interactive art and a bicycle repair station offered by Common Cycle.

Over the past year, ongoing actions toward universitywide carbon neutrality by 2040 have featured geo-exchange construction and solar installation planning across campuses, efforts aimed toward decarbonizing health care, and various involvement pathways, grants, programs and events focused on fostering a shared culture of sustainability.
