Peter Gustav Meier, professor emeritus of environmental health sciences in the School of Public Health, died peacefully Oct. 14 with family by his side, including his beloved dog, Mitzi.
Peter was born in Jagendorf, Germany, in 1937, and emigrated to the United States at the age of 14, residing in Frankenmuth, Michigan. He put himself through school by working in the hotel and restaurant industry.
His passion for aquatic biology led to a Ph.D. in environmental health sciences (water quality) at the University of Michigan, where he thrived teaching graduate students for several decades.
Peter welcomed the opportunity to immerse himself in different customs and cultures during numerous international trips as a consultant in environmental protection.
Upon entering retirement in 2001, Peter reflected on his time spent in academia and proclaimed, “It’s the greatest job I have ever had.”
His loved ones remember him for his generosity, zest for life and loving heart. He often filled the Meier home with his authentic German cooking and shared stories of his mushroom hunts with glee. He was a loyal Michigan Wolverine until his death.
Peter is survived by his wife, Barbara Meier, whom he affectionately referred to as “Frau Dudeldorf”; daughter Kristina Gallagher, and son-in-law, Jim Gallagher; daughter Erika Meier, and son-in-law, Erik Dahl; grandson, Devon Gallagher, and granddaughter, Whitney Gallagher.
Peter was a beloved husband, father, educator, mentor and good friend. His warm personality and endearing character will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
