Flu shot clinics set for university employees this fall

Fall Health & Wellness Fair

MHealthy Wellness Champions will host a Fall Health & Wellness Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the plaza between South Hall and Weill Hall. The fair will offer a farmers’ market, flu shots, and free massages, as well as a number of health and wellness vendors from the university and greater Ann Arbor communities. Those who plan to get a flu shot should bring an ID and insurance card. If insurance does not cover flu shots, participants can pay $25 via cash/check/credit.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best way to prevent influenza is to receive a seasonal flu shot. U-M faculty and staff covered under a university health plan can receive their flu vaccination on campus without paying an out-of-pocket fee.

“Influenza, even when mild, is likely to cause a person to be out of commission an average of two to seven days,” says Dr. Robert Winfield, U-M’s chief health officer. “Some symptoms such as fatigue may last several weeks. Vaccination for seasonal influenza typically reduces the chances of becoming ill by 50-75 percent. There are a number of convenient university locations and times where employees can receive a vaccination without an appointment, and with no out-of-pocket payment.”

MHealthy, in partnership with Michigan Visiting Care (MVC), will host walk-in flu shot clinics at the following locations for faculty and staff who work on Ann Arbor’s Central, North and South campuses, and Dearborn and Flint campuses:

• Sept. 19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Michigan Union, Pond Room ABC.

• Sept. 23, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Michigan League, Vandenberg Room.

• Sept. 25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Palmer Commons, Great Lakes Central Room.

• Oct. 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Duderstadt Connector Hall.

• Oct. 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., UM-Flint, Harding-Mott University Center, Michigan Room A.

• Oct. 23, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., UM-Dearborn, University Center, Kochoff Hall C.

Employees covered under a U-M health insurance plan will not be charged an out-of-pocket fee when they bring their insurance card to the on-site clinic. The cost of the flu shot will be charged directly to their health plan. Employees not covered under an accepted insurance plan can still receive a flu shot at a rate of $25 per person, payable by cash, check or credit card.

In addition to the MHealthy/MVC clinics, campus employees can also get a flu shot by appointment at the University Health Service. More information is available at www.uhs.umich.edu/fluvaccination.

For those who work at the U-M Health System, including the Medical School, all information about the requirements — and the many different ways Health System community members can receive the vaccine — is available at www.med.umich.edu/u/flu. The website must be accessed from a U-M computer or virtual network.
