Visitor reports attempted robbery at West Hall
A visitor reported to U-M Police July 26 that two men had tried to rob him about 3:15 a.m. by the West Hall arch. One of the men reportedly brandished a black handgun and demanded money. The victim fled the scene.
He described one man as Middle Eastern or black, 6 feet tall, 160 pounds with curly hair, wearing a gray tank top and shorts with tattoos on both arms. The other man was described as Middle Eastern or black, 5 feet, 7 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 160 pounds, muscular and wearing red clothing. The investigation has been closed as the victim has not responded to follow-up contact.
Two sexual assaults by known subjects
Two women filed reports of sexual assault in campus buildings in June. In each incident, the women knew the men.
On July 24, an Ann Arbor woman reported that she had been assaulted on July 17 by a man attending a conference. The two subjects reportedly had met at a local restaurant. The man, who was staying at the North Quad Residential and Academic Complex during the conference, reportedly took the woman to his room where the alleged assault occurred. He left town later that week. The investigation is continuing.
In a separate incident, an employee at Palmer Commons told police July 16 that she had been inappropriately grabbed by a co-worker the previous day. The suspect was arrested July 18 on a charge of criminal sexual conduct fourth-degree, which is a misdemeanor with a two-year penalty. He was bound over for a September trial.
Patient threatened hospital staff member
A University Hospital patient reportedly threatened a nurse July 22 while wielding a pair of scissors. The nurse successfully confiscated the scissors without either person sustaining injuries. The case was closed because the nurse did not want to pursue charges.
Cooley lab broken into
A first-floor Cooley Laboratory room reportedly was broken into July 5 around 9:40 p.m. A research fellow told U-M Police July 7 that he found a window in his lab door broken when he arrived that morning. A laptop also was missing. There are no suspects.
Money stolen from rooms of three campers
Three youth who were staying at Bursley Hall for a summer camp reported that cash had been taken from their rooms July 24 while they were away from their rooms. They reportedly had left the room doors open while they were gone. There are no suspects.
Office windows found broken
Door windows to three ninth-floor offices in the Dennison Building were found broken July 22. No property appeared to be missing or disturbed. There are no suspects.
Attempted burglary at Forest Street Structure
While receiving treatment at the U-M Emergency Department, a visitor reported that he had been punched in the face by one of three unknown men in the Forest Street parking structure July 13. The victim said he and a friend had been drinking beer on the top level of the parking structure, when the three men approached them. The suspects also reportedly attempted to take the victim’s alcohol but it dropped on the floor as the three fled in a red sedan. There are no suspects.
