Program promotes farm-fresh produce at three campus locations

The university community now has convenient options around campus to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Affordable farm-fresh produce will be available through the Eat Smarter Fresh Produce Series on select dates at three university locations: University Hospital’s Towsley Triangle, Wolverine Tower, and the North Campus Research Complex.

“The Fresh Produce Series encourages us to eat smarter by adding more fruits and vegetables to our lives and it supports a campus commitment to offer sustainable, locally sourced foods,” says Erica Owen, manager of nutrition and weight management services for MHealthy. “What better way to encourage healthy eating than having the freshest, locally grown produce available right where you work and at an affordable price.”

Upcoming dates:

• Produce Days at Wolverine Tower — June 26, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Continues on select days through Oct. 24.

• The Produce Cart at University Hospital’s Towsley Triangle — June 27 and July 11, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Continues every Thursday through Oct. 31.

• Produce Days at NCRC — June 27, 11 a.m-1 p.m. Continues on select days through November 24.

Cash is accepted at all locations, and some also accept credit and debit cards. Shoppers are encouraged to bring a reusable bag for purchases.

“Once you’ve shopped at one of our produce events, then use your purchase to create some of the healthy and delicious recipes available on MHealthy’s website,” says Owen. “There’s something for every meal of the day and all recipes meet MHealthy’s Nutrition Guidelines.”

The Fresh Produce Series is a partnership between MHealthy, UMHS, NCRC, Wolverine Tower Wellness Committee, the Office of Sustainability, Zilke Vegetable Farm and Aramark.
