Two crime alerts still unsolved
Two major crimes — a sexual assault and a robbery — that reportedly occurred on campus in April still are under investigation, but U-M police have few leads.
On April 28, a female visitor told police that as she was walking from South University through the West Hall arch around 3 a.m., she was assaulted by an unknown male. He reportedly pushed her from behind, told her to be quiet and attempted to remove her pants. When other pedestrians approached, he fled on foot. The suspect was described as a black male, 35 years old, 6 feet tall, with a thin build, dark complexion, wearing a black baseball cap, blue sweatshirt and jeans. He also was carrying a backpack.
On April 17, a student told police that he had been robbed on North Campus two nights earlier. He reported that he had been walking between Hayward Street and Hubbard Road around 10 p.m. April 15. He said he was approached by two men, one of whom brandished a folding knife. They demanded his wallet, took the cash out of it and threw the wallet aside before threatening the victim not to contact police. The men reportedly left on foot. They are described as two black men, about 20 years, about 6 feet or 6 feet, 1 inch, tall, wearing dark clothing, including sweatshirt hoods over their heads. One man also was heavy-set and was wearing a mask over his face.
Anyone with information about either of these incidents is asked to contact the U-M Police Department at 734-763-1131.
Four campus burglaries reported in April
Two burglaries of student residences and two burglaries of campus offices were reported in April. Police have no leads in any of the four investigations.
An Alice Lloyd resident reported that a computer printer had been removed from his room while he was not home between 5:30 and 10:30 p.m. April 28. He said he thought he had closed his door, but found it open when he returned. There were no signs of forced entry and no other property reportedly was missing.
A Northwood Community Apartments resident reported April 30 that personal property, including a microwave, jewelry, shoes, two books and a bed comforter had been removed from her Cram Circle apartment sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Her apartment door reportedly was locked and there were no signs of forced entry.
Computer accessories, headphones and a gift card reportedly were taken from three offices in Hatcher Library April 4. Two offices likely were accessed by pushing in a set of double doors that weren’t securely latched, while the third was entered by climbing over a wall. There are no suspects and the case has been closed.
A laptop and gift cards reportedly were taken from a School of Social Work fourth-floor office suite on April 29. The area apparently was accessed after someone moved the glass entrance door off its track, likely between 5:15 and 6:25 p.m. The case remains under investigation.
Two campus arsons after basketball game
After the U-M men’s basketball NCAA semi-final championship game April 8, two couches reportedly were set on fire in campus parking lots. Ann Arbor Fire Department personnel extinguished fires in Lot M66 on North Ingalls and SC41 on Hoover Street. No additional damage and no injuries were reported. Police have no suspects.
Vehicle reported stolen, found nearby
An older model sedan reportedly was taken from the Trotter House parking lot off Washtenaw Avenue between 12:30 and 2:45 a.m. April 13. The vehicle was recovered April 16 in a nearby church parking lot. It had no damage and nothing was missing from the vehicle. There are no suspects.
