Volunteers share the joy at commencement

To help make Spring Commencement a memorable one for 2013 graduates and their families, volunteers are sought to pass out programs, answer questions and help in other ways, mostly Saturday morning.

The Office of University and Development Events is organizing volunteers, who receive a T-shirt to wear to the ceremony along with a concession voucher for a food item, a beverage and a parking pass. They also get to see Twitter CEO and U-M alumnus Dick Costolo’s commencement address.

“It’s an opportunity to share in the excitement,” says Anne Hart, senior events manager in LSA, who has volunteered at commencement for 10 years. Hart says she appreciates the chance to hear the words of commencement speakers and share in the energy and joy of graduates and their families attending the event at the Big House.

Most volunteer shifts are from 7 a.m.-noon at Michigan Stadium. Volunteers are entered in a drawing to win one of two prizes of four tickets each to a 2013 fall U-M football game or one of 20 $25 gift cards to Ann Arbor businesses.

Other volunteer tasks include helping handicapped or limited-mobility guests find their seats; educating and assisting guests in disposing their waste into landfill, recycling, or compost bins at at eco-friendly waste stations; and assisting guests at area hotels find and ride the shuttle bus to Michigan Stadium.
