In April 1973 the Board of Regents approved a student fee allocation to finance two new recreational buildings, the Central Campus Recreation Building and the North Campus Recreational Facility. An increased demand for modern recreational facilities led to this approval of the two buildings, which were authorized for construction in 1974 at a combined cost of $7.7 million.
