Faculty and staff who want to get moving but have never exercised before or have not been physically active in a while can register for a free exercise class designed specifically for beginners.
The 15-week Simple Steps classes meet twice a week for 30 minutes, helping to add physical activity gradually into participants’ lives.
Simple Steps began in 2011 as a two-year pilot program. Monique Green participated in the pilot after her nutritionist recommended exercise and changing her eating habits as a way to control her high cholesterol.
“After 15 weeks of doing the class, I came away feeling so much better and having a lot more energy than when I began, and I also lost a little weight,” says Green, an administrative assistant in the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects.
Classes start May 2 and May 6 at the following locations:
• University Hospital, Psych. Gym, ninth floor, Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30-8 a.m.
• North Campus Research Complex, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-8:30 a.m.
• KMS, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m.-noon.
• West Hall, Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30-8 a.m.
“Simple Steps is perfect for anyone who has not exercised in a while but wants to get moving,” says Wendy Dolen-Morawa, MHealthy wellness coordinator. “It’s a relaxed, no-judgment environment that provides an effective introduction to physical activity.”
Simple Steps is free to participants who attend at least 80 percent of the class. For those who attend less than 80 percent, the cost is $40.
