The development of a comprehensive Division of Public Safety and Security for the Ann Arbor campus takes a step forward this week as the search for the first executive director of the new division is opened to interested candidates.
With the position now posted online, the search advisory committee, chaired by Liz Barry, managing director of the Life Sciences Institute, is accepting applications. The Spelman & Johnson Group, a search firm with a specialty in higher education, will assist in the search.
The committee will present recommended candidates to President Mary Sue Coleman as soon as possible. The executive director reports to the president.
The division was created in October 2012 by the Board of Regents as part of a realignment of all campus safety and security services. At that time, U-M Police Chief Joe Piersante was named interim executive director of DPSS and he will serve until the search concludes.
Included in the new division are several safety and security units that recently were renamed to better reflect their areas of responsibility. They include:
• U-M Police Department (UMPD), formerly the Department of Public Safety.
• Hospitals and Health Centers Security Services (HHCSS), commonly called Hospital Security.
• Housing Security and Safety Services (HSSS), formerly Housing Security.
• University Security Services (USS), a new unit consisting of the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Security Systems and Technology Management, U-M Art Museum security, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology security and contract security.
In addition to Barry, members of the search advisory committee include:
• Mark Banaszak-Holl, professor of chemistry, macromolecular science and engineering, and biomedical engineering, and former associate vice president for research.
• Darrell “Skip” Campbell, Henry King Ransom Professor of Surgery and chief medical officer at the U-M Health System.
• Nancy Diehl, retired chief of the Trial Division at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
• E. Royster Harper, vice president for student affairs.
• Debra Kowich, interim associate vice president and deputy general counsel, Health System Legal Office.
• John Seto, Ann Arbor police chief.
• Gary Krenz, special counsel to the U-M president.
• Kathleen Sutcliffe, the Gilbert and Ruth Whitaker Professor of Business Administration and professor of organizational behavior and human resource management.
Lisa Connolly, project manager in the Office of the President, will act as the president’s liaison to the search.
