Six faculty members have been named 2012-13 fellows in the Academic Leadership Program of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC).
Established in 1989, the Academic Leadership Program helps faculty members who show exceptional ability and promise to develop leadership and managerial skills for administrative roles in higher education.
The fellows attend three seminars during the academic year that focus on issues facing contemporary higher education, including the role of research universities, diversity, sustainability, financial planning and budgeting, and public engagement. U-M will host the first seminar of 2012-13 in early November. Remaining programs will be at the University of Iowa and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
“The CIC universities face a number of similar challenges,” says Provost Phil Hanlon. “One of the great benefits of this program is the opportunity the fellows have to learn about how other universities are addressing these issues. They bring insights and new ideas back to Ann Arbor for our consideration.”
At U-M, faculty members are nominated for the ALP program by their deans, with final selection made by the provost’s office.
“This program encourages faculty to explore leadership roles and helps them develop concrete skills that are useful in their administrative roles,” says Christina Whitman, vice provost for academic and faculty affairs, who oversees the program.
The 2012-13 ALP fellows are:
• Anne Curzan, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of English language and literature, linguistics, and education. She currently is co-director of the Joint Ph.D. Program in English and Education.
• Daniel Ferris, professor of kinesiology and associate dean for research in the School of Kinesiology, professor of biomedical engineering and adjunct professor of medicine.
• Jennifer Linderman, professor of chemical engineering and biomedical engineering. She also is acting director of the ADVANCE Program.
• Brad Orr, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of physics and chair of the Department of Physics.
• Robert Sellers, Charles D. Moody Professor of Psychology, chair of the Department of Psychology, and professor of education.
• Lynn Perry Wooten, associate dean of undergraduate programs in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and clinical associate professor of corporate strategy and international business.
