Saturday Morning Physics provides chance to explore science

Since 1995, the Department of Physics has sought to create a simpler way to explain complex scientific topics.

Teaming up with the M. Lois Tiffany Endowment and the Hideko Tomozawa Endowment, the physics department creates a series of seminars to run through the fall and winter terms, which allows the public to learn more about science.

The key to each seminar, however, is to present it in a way that everyone can grasp the material. “They are specifically for the nonscientific community and are very easy to understand,” says Carol Rabuck, the administrator of the series.

Included speakers are Professor of Physics, LSA, Bing Zhou, who will discuss a new particle discovery, as well as U-M’s Vice President of Research Stephen Forrest, who will talk about solar-powered houses.

In addition, on Oct. 13 Professor of Physics James Liu will explain the physics of sound waves, and how various instruments create particular musical tones.

Open to the public, the seminars begin at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 6, with refreshments provided beginning at 10 a.m.
