Accolades

Korey Jackson, lecturer in English language and literature, and Council on Library and Information Resources Postdoctoral Fellow at MPublishing, has received a 2012 Public Fellows award from the American Council of Learned Societies. As a fellow, Jackson will serve as program coordinator and analyst for Anvil Academic, a digital publisher for the humanities.

Francis X. Blouin Jr., director of the Bentley Historical Library, professor of information, School of Information, and professor of history; and William G. Rosenberg, professor emeritus of history, LSA, are the 2012 recipients of the Waldo Gifford Leland Award given by the Society of American Archivists for their book “Processing the Past: Contesting Authority in History and the Archives.” The award is given for writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the fields of archival history, theory and practice.

Lauren Hersch Nicholas, research investigator, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, recently received the AcademyHealth Article-of-the-Year Award for “Regional Variation in the Association Between Advance Directives and End-of-Life Medicare Expenditures,” her paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association with fellow SRC-Population Studies Center affiliates Ken Langa, Jack Iwashyna and David Weir.

Letha A. Chadiha, professor of social work, has been elected a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine by its Board of Trustees. The academy is dedicated to advancing the health of urban populations, including the elimination of health disparities, promotion of healthy aging, and prevention of disease among urban residents through the engagement of urban communities in partnerships.

James Liu, professor of physics, LSA, has been chosen to receive the 2012 John Dewey Award for long-term commitment to undergraduate teaching. Recipients of this award are selected by the LSA Executive Committee. The award honors those who in the spirit of John Dewey have shown a consistent dedication to the education of undergraduates.

Kenneth C. Fischer, president of the University Musical Society, has been awarded the 2012 Mariam C. Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership by The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. The award recognizes a nonprofit president or CEO in Southeast Michigan whose service exemplifies the importance of nonprofit leadership to the wider nonprofit community.

Dr. Lisa Newman, director of the Breast Care Center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor of surgery at the Medical School, has been named one of the Detroit News’ Michiganians of the Year. Newman was honored for her work in disparities related to an aggressive type of breast cancer called triple negative, which disproportionately affects African-American women.

Katta G. Murty, emeritus professor of industrial and operations engineering, College of Engineering, has been recognized by the American Society of Engineering Education with the Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for his latest “Optimization for Decision Making: Linear and Quadratic Models,” and seven other textbooks he has authored, used widely worldwide.
