Awards
U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves and Associate Director for Research and Methodology and Chief Scientist Roderick Little, both U-M faculty, have received Washington Academy of Sciences Awards. The Academy honored Groves, professor of sociology, LSA, and research professor, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, for excellence in behavioral sciences and social science and efforts to improve and inform survey data collection. Little, a Richard D. Remington Collegiate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics, which he chaired from 1993-2001 and 2006-09, also is a professor of statistics and research at ISR.
Dr. Stefani Hudson, medical director at the U-M Ypsilanti Health Center, has been named 2012 Physician of the Year by Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. Hudson was recognized for playing a key role in establishing the center’s reputation for quality care, for volunteer work including service with the non-profit free Hope Clinic in Ypsilanti, and as a mentor and caregiver.
Leopoldo Pando Zayas, associate professor of physics, LSA, has been selected to receive an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Outstanding Research Mentor Award from U-M. This distinction recognizes his contributions to the mentorship and development of young scholars and researchers. The nomination speaks to the importance of such mentorship in helping students identify future academic and career goals.
The Michigan Union has been selected as a 2012 winner for best venue in The Knot Best of Weddings, a special section in The Knot Michigan magazine and online at www.theknot.com. The selections are made based on experiences of newlyweds. This summer, more than 40 couples are booking the Union or Michigan League, a 2010 Knot Best of Weddings winner.
Named
Ivette Perfecto, the George Willis Pack Professor of Natural Resources and Environment at the School of Natural Resources and Environment, has been named to the first Scientific Council on Biodiversity for the Central American Integration System. The council will create a network of biodiversity experts for Central America and will recommend new policies to ensure awareness and promote sustainable biological diversity.
The American Academy of Nursing’s 2012 Class of Fellows includes five from U-M: Cynthia Arslanian-Engoren, Christopher Friese, Maria Katapodi, Jody Lori and Janis Miller. Selection criteria include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care. Selection is based, in part, on the extent to which nominees’ nursing careers influence health policies and the heath and well being of all.
The National Association of College and University Food Services has recognized the U-M-Ohio State University Rivalry Dinner in November with the Gold honor in the 39th Annual Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards under the Catering-Special Events (Large Schools) category. The award celebrates exemplary menus, presentations and special event planning. Chefs Rob Sutch, Aaron Bruck, John Merucci, Peter Veach, David Young, and chef interns Monisha Dodson and Nick Machcinski represented U-M.
