Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum celebrate spring with a Mother’s Day Weekend Plant Sale and Fundraiser Saturday and Sunday at the botanical gardens, and the Nichols Arboretum Peony Festival May 15-June 5.

A large selection of hanging baskets and containers will be available at the Mother’s Day Sale. They will be filled with plants displaying varied colors and textures, all grown and arranged by Matthaei-Nichols staff and volunteers. Plus, there will be Mother’s Day and nature-themed items in the Garden Store at Matthaei.

There is free admission from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day. All proceeds benefit MBGNA.

The Peony Festival, from 10 a.m.-4:30 each day, celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden, the largest collection of antique and heirloom peonies in North America. The peony garden also will be home to the MBGNA-Confucius Institute sponsored presentation Peony Blossoms and Pure Melodies: A performance of songs from Chinese Opera at 6:30 p.m. May 23.

The festival also offers self-guided tours, cut-flower displays in the Reader Center and more. There is free admission. Nichols Arboretum is open sunrise to sunset. For updates on MBGNA events, go to www.lsa.umich.edu/mbg/, the Facebook page at tinyurl.com/74kohbj or call 734-647-7600.
