The 1972 Title IX federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity, including athletics. In a 1998 review of how Title IX had impacted the university, it was reported that women’s athletics had grown in participation, scholarships and budgets. It was noted that in 1996-97, the number of female student athletes had reached 308. In the 2011-12 school year, 429 women competed in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball and water polo. — The University Record, U.S. Department of Justice website and U-M Athletic Department
