The university continues to be recognized for its academic strength nationally in the latest U.S News & World Report rankings of graduate programs.
Among the programs ranked each year in America’s Best Graduate Schools — business, education, engineering, law and medicine — U-M maintained top-15 rankings in all five categories.
The annual list shows consistently high rankings for U-M programs.
• The Medical School’s primary care ranking rose to eighth in the nation, up 12 spots from last year, and its research ranking stayed at 10th.
• The College of Engineering climbed to eighth from ninth.
• The Stephen M. Ross School of Business rose to 13th from 14th.
The Law School (10th) and School of Education (12th) both dropped three spots from last year.
Three programs that U.S. News ranks periodically also were on the list for the first time since 2008. The School of Social Work moved up to the No. 1 slot from second; the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy ranks 12th, down from seventh; and the College of Pharmacy ranks seventh, down from fifth.
In addition to the main program rankings, U-M was rated on 38 specialties. Of those, three were ranked first: higher education administration, nuclear engineering and social policy. All told, 31 of the 38 specialties in which U-M is ranked either improved their positions or stayed the same.
Many specialties did not receive new rankings this year. But among those that did, U-M was ranked as follows:
• Business specialties: accounting (6), entrepreneurship (11), executive MBA (8), finance (11), information systems (13), international (4), management (5), marketing (5), part-time MBA (6), production/operations (6), supply chain/logistics (11).
• Education specialties: curriculum/instruction (10), educational psychology (2), educational policy (6), elementary education (6), higher education administration (1) and secondary education (4).
• Engineering specialties: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical (5), biomedical/bioengineering (7), civil (8), computer (7), electrical/electronic/communications (7), environmental (5), industrial/manufacturing (2), materials (8), mechanical (5) and nuclear (1).
• Fine Arts (27).
• Law specialties: clinical training (14), international law (9), tax law (11).
• Medical specialties: family medicine (7), geriatrics (6), internal medicine (6), women’s health (5).
• Public Affairs specialties: social policy (1), public policy (3), environmental policy and management (3).
