U-M has been ranked 12th in the annual Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings announced March 15. The 2012 Reputation Rankings are based on results from an invitation-only survey of scholars from around the world.
The rankings were based on responses from 17,554 academics from 137 countries.
U-M is one of only four public institutions in the top 25 — the others are University of California, Berkeley (5), U-C, Los Angeles (9), and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (23). Of these, only UCLA and U-M rose in the ranks, with U-M moving up from 13th last year.
U-M leaders say efforts to preserve and enhance academics even in the face of decreased state funding and increased costs have helped the university maintain its global reputation.
In a notification to the university announcing the rankings, Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings, was quoted: “Only 100 universities are listed in our prestigious World Reputation Rankings — that is around 0.5 percent of the world’s higher education institutions. So those that feature in the list are part of an exclusive global elite of exceptionally powerful university brands.” The United States had 44 institutions on the list.
The ranking is one of two released annually by the organization. More comprehensive World University Rankings that list the top 400 universities are based on more performance indicators including teaching, research volume, income, reputation and citations, industry income and international outlook. U-M ranked 18th on that list.
