This month in history (95 years ago)

In the early 1900s, alumni and friends of the university raised $60,000 for a new YMCA. That amount was matched by John D. Rockefeller, and on March 2, 1917, the new building was opened and named in honor of Judge Victor H. Lane, a law professor and for many years YMCA president. Today it is home to the Women’s Studies Department, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, the ADVANCE program, the Center for Advancing Research and Solutions for Society and the Lane Hall Gallery. — Courtesy “Photographic Saga of the University of Michigan” by Anne Duderstadt.
