Astronomy legend

Professor Hazel Marie Losh, shown circa 1950 at the U-M Detroit Observatory, was known as one of the most popular astronomy professors in the history of the department, where she taught from 1928 until her retirement in 1969. A fervent Wolverine sports fan who traveled to bowl games to support the football team, Losh once said, “You can’t just have astronomy all the time.” — Courtesy Bentley Historical Library

U-M faculty members James Chaffers, professor of architecture, and John Lockard, adjunct lecturer in Afroamerican and African studies, LSA, were among the jurors who decided the winner of the Martin Luther King Memorial design contest. They helped determine the criteria for entries and then helped judge more than 1,000 submissions from 27 different countries. The finished memorial was dedicated in 2011 in Washington, D.C. — The University Record
