International Center reminds students to stay safe in winter

Though the weather in Ann Arbor has been unseasonably mild so far, it shouldn’t be long before winter grips the city with snow, ice and sub-freezing temperatures. And while this won’t seem unusual for most students, many international students are not accustomed to Michigan winters.

The International Center has long offered programs to help international students with the many facets of life on campus and in Ann Arbor. While part of those services have focused on preparing for a more harsh winter than many international students are used to, additional programming was added last year to help students better cope with getting around Ann Arbor in the winter months.

One such program, “Driving in the U.S.,” focuses on all aspects of driving in the United States, including driving customs and laws. It also emphasizes how to drive safely in poor weather conditions, like snow and ice, which challenge many international students.

Louise Baldwin, associate director of the International Center, says the workshop is just one of several valuable resources offered during orientation to help international students.

“The overall mission of the International Center is to help international students achieve their academic and personal goals while they are students at the university by acting as a resource and advocate for them,” Baldwin says. “This new workshop is another way we are working to do this and it is meant to help students be prepared for winter and be safe on the roads.”

The International Center offers several other programs for students around winter preparation and driving safety, including workshops on personal safety, public transportation options, preparing for winter weather and becoming a licensed driver in the United States.

Kate Zheng, the program coordinator for the International Center, says each of the workshops was offered during orientation last fall and all were well attended.

“We had a very positive turnout in these workshops, and it’s important that students remain mindful of what they learned in the fall and take the necessary precautionary steps to stay warm and safe this winter,” Zheng says.

Zheng emphasized several key tips for international students to remember this winter:

❚ Bundle up — It can become very cold in Michigan during the winter months and the wind can make it feel even chillier. Dress in layers and make sure to use hats, earmuffs, scarves and gloves.

❚ Slow down — Roads and sidewalks can be very icy in the winter. Make sure to allow extra travel time so that you can reach your destination safely.

❚ Be aware — When driving or walking, ensure your safety by watching your surroundings carefully.

❚ Enjoy it — Make sure to enjoy the winter season and take advantage of some of the fun winter activities on campus and in the local area.
