Don’t miss: Russian politics and censorship examined

Victor Shenderovich, political satirist and journalist, will give his perspective on the bittersweet experience of the Russian media in the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR, in the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Noon Lecture, “On Again, Off Again: Freedom of Speech in Russia.”

The talk is from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 1636 International Institute in the School of Social Work Building.

Shenderovich was the creator of the television show “Kukly (Puppets),” which caricatured Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin and other prominent figures of Russian politics. Shenderovich will talk about the ascent and defeat of the television channel NTV, which suffered the consequences of exercising the right to free speech in Putin’s Russia. He also will discuss censorship and self-censorship and the power of underground satire in modern Russia.

This talk will be presented in Russian, with translation by Anna Krushelnitskaya. Sponsors are CREES and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.
