Other American women preceded Sarah Killgore Wertman in entering law school, graduating, or being admitted to the bar. But she was the first to accomplish all three. During a campus symposium celebrating the establishment of the Theodore Roosevelt Professorship in Ecosystem Management at the School of Natural Resources and Environment, Roosevelt’s granddaughter Anna Roosevelt said the nation’s 24th president would look upon pollution “as soiling our nest.” The professorship was named in honor of Roosevelt, whose vision led to the creation of national parks, game refuges, and the National Forest Service. — The University Record
