Ferry Field gate

The ornamental wrought iron gate and wall of Bedford limestone and brick at Ferry Field on State Street were designed by noted Detroit architect Albert Kahn. The wall was completed in spring 1906. To accommodate Michigan football’s soaring popularity, football games were moved to Michigan Stadium in fall 1927. — Courtesy Bentley Historical Library and Michigan Stadium Renovation page. The Council for Disability Concerns established the James T. Neubacher Award as a memorial to Jim Neubacher, an alumnus who was a columnist for The Detroit Free Press and an advocate for equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities. The first recipients were William Waring III, lecturer in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and wife, Mary Waring, consultant for the Huron Valley Girl Scout Council, who arranged for children with disabilities to participate in scouting. The award is presented annually in October during Investing in Ability Week, a series of programs and activities designed to increase awareness and understanding of disabilities and related issues.
