A bas relief devoted to art completed in 1924 is one of four works flanking the main stairs of Angell Hall. The sculptures celebrate poetry, history, philosophy and art, suggesting the functions of the building. — President’s Advisory Committee on Public Art

This month in history (42 years ago)

Three months after the Board of Regents approved $250,000 to install 88,285 feet of artificial Tartan Turf at Michigan Stadium, the football team on Sept. 20, 1969, broke in the surface by defeating Vanderbilt 42-14. Because of its gripping ability, the turf was blamed for knee injuries and natural grass returned for the 1991 season. In 2003 FieldTurf, an improved, pre-dyed artificial turf, was installed. It was replaced by new application of FieldTurf in 2010. — Bentley Historical Library and the Department of Athletics
