U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit U-M on Thursday, where he, along with a faculty panel from the School of Education, will discuss how to promote excellence in America’s classrooms, particularly for disadvantaged and underserved students.
Duncan will appear at 11 a.m. Thursday at the School of Education, Room 2202.
Secretary Duncan will give an overview on the administration’s effort to achieve President Obama’s national goal of the United States having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
Duncan’s appearance is an addition to his “Education and the Economy” bus tour Wednesday through Friday. Besides Michigan, he will visit several cities throughout the Midwest including stops in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois.
Along the way, Duncan and senior staff will hold various events to support the work of the nation’s educators, parents and administrators in building a strong cradle-to-college and career continuum that prepares students to compete in the growing global economy. Throughout the tour, Duncan will discuss the administration’s dual commitments — investing in education to secure our future and reducing spending while increasing efficiency.
