Active U raises $9,800 for Emergency Hardship Program

Active U’s sixth year proved to be its biggest to date, with more than 11,300 participants logging more than 20 million physical activity minutes and raising $9,841 for the U-M Emergency Hardship Program.

This year, participants donated more than $9,800 to go to charities chosen by randomly selected teams from each of the university’s three campuses. All three teams, MOTT PACU, Ross Careers and The Thompson Tornado, selected the U-M Emergency Hardship Program (EHP), a university program that assists employees who are experiencing an immediate, severe and temporary financial situation due to an emergency.

“This is an excellent sign of commitment by our staff and faculty to help fellow employees who are in need,” says Tom Waldecker, director of the U-M Faculty and Staff Assistance Program and a member of the EHP Finance Committee. “We all are susceptible to having a financial situation that catches us off guard and unprepared. The Emergency Hardship Program helps to fill some of the gap caused by an emergency financial crisis.”

Active U also gave away three cash grand prizes ranging from $250 to $500 to Active U participants who successfully completed eight out of 12 program weeks and answered the post-program questions. One winner was chosen from each campus:

❙ JoAnn Ford, UM-Flint, $500

❙ Noel Hornbacher, UM-Dearborn, $250

❙ Tamara Neely, U-M, Ann Arbor campus, $250
