Old school: U-M in History

China’s first female college president

Wu Yi-Fang, who earned a doctorate degree from U-M in 1928, was the first female college president in China, heading Ginling College from 1928-51 before it merged with the University of Nanjing. She attended U-M on a Barbour scholarship, established by Levi Lewis Barbour for Asian women to come to U-M to study academic disciplines critical to the development of their homeland. The program continues today, with five to eight Barbour scholarships awarded each year. — Courtesy Bentley Historical Library and the Rackham Graduate School
