Meetings of the University Senate and the Senate Assembly that had been scheduled for today (Feb. 21) have been postponed until March 21.
“We have an issue involving tenure clock flexibility that needs to be addressed before holding the special Senate meeting,” faculty governance leaders wrote in an e-mail message sent to Senate members Feb. 18.
The meeting had been scheduled to discuss an administration proposal to change Regents Bylaw 5.09, increasing the maximum allowable faculty tenure probationary period from eight to 10 years.
“In the spirit of cooperation on this issue, we are fully exploring multiple approaches,” states the message signed by Senate Chair Ed Rothman, Vice Chair Gina Poe and Interim Secretary Robert Fraser.
“Further, more time for greater vetting of the various options will provide faculty and the administration with a better understanding of the issues. More specific information will be sent to you soon and it is our intent to provide all available documentation of every option,” they wrote.
The March Senate meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. following a brief Senate Assembly session set for 3:15 p.m. Both meetings are in Forum Hall of Palmer Commons.
The Senate includes all professorial faculty (assistant, associate and full tenured or tenure-track professors), all librarians, primary research faculty with full-time appointments, executive officers and deans.
