Line items in the State of Michigan budget detailing appropriations to U-M included the annual entry, “Treadwell Free Bed $50.” The money comes from a $2,000 sum Adah Zillah Wooden Treadwell bequeathed the university in 1901. Her will stipulated that the interest, 2-1/2 percent, was to be forwarded every year to the Board of Regents, in support of a free bed in University Hospital “for some poor and needy patient.”  — The University Record
